Learning Intention & Success Criteria
WALT: We are learning to calculate and record time using analogue and digital clocks I can read an analogue clock I can write the matching digital time I can work out what the time will be after a given number of minutes I can draw the new time on a clock
Analogue Clock Recap
Hour hand - short and thick Minute hand - long and thin Hour hand points to the hour Minute hand points to the minutes Numbers 1-12 around the clock face
Counting by 5s Around the Clock
Start at 12 = 0 minutes Count by 5s: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30... Each number represents 5 minutes Practice together as a class
WE DO: Read the Analogue Clock
Look at the analogue clock I'm showing Write the matching digital time on your mini whiteboard Remember: hour first, then minutes Use the format: __:__
Check for Understanding
Hold up your whiteboards on the count of 3 1... 2... 3... SHOW ME! Check your answer with your partner Turn and talk about how you got your answer
WE DO: Adding Time
What time will it be in 15 minutes? Start time: 2:30 Add 15 minutes Show me your thinking
Teacher Modelling: Using Number Line
Start at 2:30 on the number line Count forward 15 minutes 2:30 → 2:35 → 2:40 → 2:45 The answer is 2:45
WE DO: Draw the New Time
Draw 2:45 on your analogue clock Hour hand between 2 and 3 Minute hand pointing to 9 Show me your clocks!
Check for Understanding: Elapsed Time
Sarah starts reading at 1:20 She reads for 25 minutes What time does she finish reading? Work it out on your mini clocks!
YOU DO: Independent Practice
Work on your own mini clocks Start time: 3:15 Add 20 minutes Draw both the start time and end time Write the digital times underneath
